Rapid colour change by the spider, Tylorida striata (Thorell, 1877) (Araneae: Tetragnathidae)

چکیده

Although it has been known since the 19th century that the tetragnathid spider Tylorida striata has the capability of rapidly changing colour, descriptions of this to date have been limited to simply noting that it darkens in response to disturbance. The process of rapid colour change by this species is described here formally, both qualitatively and quantitatively, for the first time. Submergence in ethanol elicited no rapid colour change – demonstrating that the colour change is induced by a perceived environmental signal rather than a received physiological stress. This is also consistent with observations of modification of the response as a result of familiarisation. It is hypothesised that, in association with web-dropping escape behaviour, rapid colour change probably serves a cryptic function.

Bridging the distributional gap of Tylorida striata (Thorell, 1877) and new synonymy (Araneae: Tetragnathidae)

BACKGROUND Although Tyloridastriata has not been reported from India, observations on India Biodiversity Portal (IBP 2015), an open access repository for biodiversity information of Indian subcontinent, showed images resembling this species. The respective locality in Gujarat, India was explored and specimens were studied to confirm record of T.striata in India. Literature study showed some tax...

Description of male Tylorida sataraensis Kulkarni, 2014 (Araneae, Tetragnathidae) with notes on habits and conservation status

The male sex of Tyloridasataraensis Kulkarni, 2014 is described based on specimens from the type locality. The distinguishing characters from its closest species Tyloridaventralis (Thorell, 1877) are detailed. An interesting behaviour of going underwater by T.sataraensis, on disturbance is recorded and tested for significance. The surveys have shown sighting of this species only to the perennia...

Until dirt do us apart : On the unremarkable palp morphology of the spider

Examination of the holotype of the tetragnathid spider Sternospina concretipalpis Schmidt & Krause, 1993 demonstrates that the extraordinary claim by the authors of the original description of this species that the male palps are fused is unfounded. The monotypic genus Sternospina Schmidt & Krause, 1993 is a junior synonym of Tylorida Simon, 1894 and S. concretipalpis is a junior synonym of the...

The Complete Mitochondrial Genome of two Tetragnatha Spiders (Araneae: Tetragnathidae): Severe Truncation of tRNAs and Novel Gene Rearrangements in Araneae

Mitogenomes can provide information for phylogenetic analysis and evolutionary biology. The Araneae is one of the largest orders of Arachnida with great economic importance. In order to develop mitogenome data for this significant group, we determined the complete mitogenomes of two long jawed spiders Tetragnatha maxillosa and T. nitens and performed the comparative analysis with previously pub...

The female genital morphology of the orb weaving spider genus Agriognatha (Araneae, Tetragnathidae).

The female genital morphology of the spiders in the araneoid genus Agriognatha (Tetragnathidae) is described and illustrated. The female genitalia of Agriognatha is characterized by a strong reduction of the sperm storage organs (spermathecae) and by the presence of a specialized distal compartment of the median membranous chamber that functions as a sperm storage organ (the posterior sac). The...
